British Columbia
- Rechargeable Batteries (other than automotive)
- Primary Batteries
As of July 1, 2010, rechargeable batteries (other than automotive), primary batteries and used cell phones as well as other small electronics are characterized as ‘household hazardous waste’. There is a ban on landfilling nickel cadmium, small seal lead acid rechargeable batteries and used cell phones. Call2Recycle® is an approved stewardship program for these materials.
Manitoba
- Rechargeable Batteries
- Primary Batteries
Effective April 1, 2011, vendors selling household primary and rechargeable batteries must operate or subscribe to an approved stewardship program. Call2Recycle® is an approved stewardship program for these materials.
Ontario
- Primary Batteries
In 2006, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment designated municipal hazardous or special wastes (“MHSW”), including rechargeable batteries, as wastes that would be subject to mandatory diversion programs under the Waste Diversion Act, 2002. On July 1, 2008, a mandatory program for diverting primary batteries was launched. This was expanded on July 1, 2010 to an all battery product stewardship program; however, on October 12, 2010, the program dropped rechargeable batteries, returning it to a primary battery product stewardship program. Call2Recycle® voluntarily recycles rechargeable batteries in the province.
Quebec
- Rechargeable Batteries
- Primary Batteries
Recyc-Québec will be implementing regulations for the recovery and reclamation of products by enterprises in the Canadian province of Quebec. Effective July 14, 2012, there will be a mandatory collection and recycling program for all batteries sold as products. As of July 14, 2013, the same regulations apply for products that contain easily removable batteries.
Call2Recycle/Appelàrecycler® will be submitting a proposal to Recyc-Québec to become the official recycling program for all household batteries - rechargeable and non-rechargeable.

Call2Recycle® is a program of the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) promoting environmental sustainability by providing free battery and cell phone recycling in North America. RBRC is a 501(c)4 nonprofit public service organization. We invite you to join our efforts to advance green business practices and environmental sustainability.
