Dear Call2Recycle Supporter,
On June 12, we wrote to you about the newly proposed waste reduction framework, Waste Reduction Act, which recently was introduced in Ontario, as well as our position and what it means to the Call2Recycle® Canadian program. More recently, we have reacted to this changing political environment to take some action which we would like to share with you.
While the Ontario landscape has frequently changed, our diligence to be recognized as a sanctioned consumer battery program in Ontario has not. With support of our collection sites and stewards, we have continued to run an all-battery program across Canada. That has limited our ability to maximize our collections and fully serve our stewards, especially in Ontario, since we are not recognized as an official program and cannot charge fees for our services. To that end, on June 25th, we resubmitted an Industry Stewardship Plan (ISP) to Waste Diversion Ontario (WDO) to become the approved recycling program for all batteries – rechargeable and non-rechargeable in the Province.
WDO could approve the ISP as early as October 1st of this year for implementation at a later date. Assuming approval of the ISP as submitted, the Call2Recycle ISP will be recognized as the comprehensive consumer battery collection program in Ontario, enabling Call2Recycle to continue serving our stewards and collection sites in the Ontario marketplace. Current Call2Recycle stewards who have stewardship obligations would no longer be subject to Stewardship Ontario’s fees and reporting.
Should the Waste Reduction Act pass in late 2013, we do not anticipate any program interruptions to our stewards or collections sites as our ISP aligns with the Individual Producer Responsibility requirement defined in the Act. Producers would decide how to meet their recycling requirements, whether individually or through a product stewardship program, like Call2Recycle.
More broadly, when Call2Recycle is approved, we will continue to help guide you through the process. For more information, please visit call2recycle.ca/ontario.
Thank you for your continued support of Call2Recycle and we look forward to working together on this exciting program expansion.
