BC Hydro switches on its battery recycling program

BC Hydro is implementing a battery recycling program to all of its office locations through a new partnership with Call2Recycle®. The new program encourages staff to responsibly recycle their household batteries (weighing up to 5 kgs) and cellphones right at the office, as well as batteries from the office operations.

The collaboration with Call2Recycle is the most recent initiative in BC Hydro’s commitment to environmental responsibility. BC Hydro’s Green Team, a collective of more than 300 employees committed to achieving conservation results on energy efficiency, sustainable transportation and waste reduction, will take an active role in getting the Call2Recycle battery program set up at all BC Hydro locations and informing employees about the service. Since Call2Recycle’s sophisticated tracking system monitors all battery collections, the Green Team will be able to report on the program’s success with exactly how many pounds are collected at BC Hydro facilities and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

With more than 80 locations across the province, BC Hydro employs approximately 6,000 staff. In 2012, BC Hydro was named by the Globe and Mail as one of Canada’s Top 50 Greenest Employers.
